Hand-Arm Vibration
Vibration Damage Can Build Before Pain Forces a Stop
Regular use of vibrating tools can damage nerves, blood vessels and joints even when each individual task feels manageable. Cold conditions, tight grip and poorly maintained equipment can increase exposure. Effective control means reducing vibration at source, limiting trigger time and acting on early symptoms rather than waiting for permanent harm.
Controls to confirm
- Select the lowest-vibration suitable tool and keep it maintained, balanced and fitted with the correct consumable for the task.
- Plan and record trigger time within the approved exposure controls, rotate or redesign work where appropriate and avoid unnecessary force or prolonged grip.
- Keep hands warm, report tingling, numbness, loss of strength or colour changes promptly and follow the occupational-health referral and surveillance process.
Today’s action
Before the first vibrating-tool task, confirm the tool condition, expected trigger time and symptom-reporting route with the user and supervisor.
