The Best Waste Container Is the One the Process Never Needs
Waste management often begins too late—after material has been purchased, opened, damaged, contaminated or mixed. Segregation supports recovery, but the stronger environmental result is to avoid creating the waste through better purchasing, inventory control, work methods and reuse. A useful waste review therefore looks upstream at why material lost its value, not only downstream at which container received it.
Controls to confirm
- Before purchasing or starting the task, confirm the actual quantity, shelf life and packaging needed, and choose approved durable, refillable, returnable or reusable options where they are practical.
- Plan the work to prevent off-cuts, spills, contamination and expired stock; keep reusable material clean, labelled and protected, and segregate unavoidable waste at the point where it is generated.
- Measure the highest-volume waste streams, investigate repeat causes, verify approved reuse, recycling and disposal routes, and feed prevention lessons back into procurement, design and task planning.
