Pollution Prevention
Protect the Drain Before the Transfer Begins

A drain can turn a small loss at the worksite into a much wider environmental impact. Before transferring fuel, chemicals, waste liquids or process fluids, identify every pathway the material could follow and place the controls before opening a valve or connection. Prevention is strongest when containment, drain protection and response materials are ready before the product starts moving.
Controls to confirm
- Inspect the hose, connection, valve, container and receiving capacity before starting the transfer.
- Position suitable secondary containment and protect nearby drains without creating a new safety hazard.
- Keep the transfer attended, stop immediately if conditions change and report any loss through the approved site process.
Today’s action
Before the first transfer today, trace the possible flow path and physically confirm the drain and containment controls with the work party.
