Nothing Is Light After It Falls
A small tool, fitting or loose item can create serious risk when work takes place above people, equipment or active areas. Hard hats are not a complete dropped-object control. Before starting, identify everything that could fall, secure what must be used and prevent access below until the overhead exposure has been removed.
Controls to confirm
- Inspect the work area, tools, materials and temporary equipment for items that could fall or be displaced.
- Use approved tool retention, secure storage and properly installed toe boards, covers or barriers where required.
- Establish and maintain an exclusion zone below, and stop work if separation or item security is lost.
Today’s action
Before overhead work begins, complete a deliberate loose-item check from the work level down to the exclusion zone.
