A Temporary Repair Still Needs a Safe Expiry
A temporary repair can restore limited function, but it does not restore the original design condition. Without defined limits, inspection and a firm route to permanent correction, a short-term measure can quietly become normal operation. Treat every temporary repair as a controlled deviation: understand what has changed, keep the remaining barriers effective and remove the repair before assumptions replace engineering judgement.
Controls to confirm
- Authorise the temporary repair through the approved technical and change-control process, recording its purpose, operating limits, hazards, owner and expiry or review date.
- Clearly identify the affected equipment and verify the required inspections, monitoring, alarms, restrictions and contingency actions throughout the temporary operating period.
- Escalate any deterioration, limit exceedance or missed review immediately, stop the affected activity when required, and complete a verified permanent repair before the temporary control expires.
