Lifting Operations and Suspended Loads
A Suspended Load Has No Safe Shortcut Beneath It
A load can swing, rotate, snag or shift even when the crane and rigging appear stable. Walking beneath it, reaching between it and a fixed object, or using hands to steady it places the body where one unexpected movement can cause crushing or fatal injury. A safe lift keeps people separated from the load path and controls movement through planning, communication and suitable equipment.
Controls to confirm
- Use an approved lift plan and competent lifting team; verify the load weight and centre of gravity, lifting points, equipment capacity, rigging condition and assigned roles before movement.
- Establish and enforce an exclusion zone for the complete load path, keep everyone out from beneath and away from pinch points, and control the load with suitable tag lines or handling tools from a safe position.
- Complete a controlled trial lift, maintain one agreed signalling and communication method, and stop to reassess for lost visibility, wind, snagging, unexpected movement, personnel entry or any deviation from the plan.
Today’s action
Before the first lift, walk the complete load path with the team and confirm the exclusion zone, safe positions, communication method and stop-work triggers.
