A Small Object at Height Can Create a Large Consequence
A hand tool, fitting or loose component does not need to be heavy to cause serious harm when it falls. Prevention starts before anyone works above another person: identify what could drop, remove what is unnecessary and secure the items that must be used. Barricades provide important separation, but they do not replace control at the source.
Controls to confirm
- Inspect the elevated work area before starting, remove loose materials and select suitable containers, tool lanyards or engineered retention for every item that must be taken aloft.
- Secure tools and components to a verified anchor or closed container, maintain good housekeeping and account for all items before changing position or completing the task.
- Establish and enforce an effective exclusion zone below the work, coordinate simultaneous activities and stop work if people, wind or changing conditions compromise the controls.
Today’s action
Before the first task at height, ask the work party to identify every loose item, show how it will be retained and confirm that the area below is protected.
