A Respirator Cannot Protect Through a Broken Seal
A suitable respirator can still fail when facial hair, damaged components, poor positioning or an incorrect size prevents an effective seal. Protection begins with controlling the airborne hazard at source; where respiratory protection is also required, the selected equipment must match the contaminant, fit the individual and remain correctly worn throughout the exposure.
Controls to confirm
- Confirm the airborne hazard, required protection and approved respirator type from the current assessment before entering the exposure area.
- Use only a fit-tested model and size, inspect the facepiece, filters and straps before use, and keep the sealing surface free from facial hair or anything else that interferes with contact.
- Complete the required user seal check every time the respirator is donned, leave the area if fit or breathing changes, and replace or maintain components through the approved programme.

Before the first respiratory-protection task, ask the wearer to demonstrate the inspection and user seal check and confirm the correct filter or cartridge.
