Temporary Edge Protection and Fall Prevention
A Guardrail Is Not Safe Because It Looks Straight
Temporary edge protection can appear complete while a loose fixing, missing toe board, excessive gap or unapproved alteration has already weakened it. People naturally treat a rail as permission to approach an edge, so a defective barrier may increase exposure by creating false confidence. Treat temporary guardrails as safety-critical equipment: install them to an approved arrangement, inspect them after anything that could disturb them, and control every change until the protection is formally restored.
Controls to confirm
- Have a competent person select and install the edge-protection system for the surface, load, geometry and work method, including suitable top rails, intermediate protection and toe boards where required; never improvise with loose rope, unsecured timber or unverified anchor points.
- Inspect the complete run before first use, at the required intervals and after impact, weather, lifting activity or nearby modification; check fixings, joints, gaps, height, stability, access points and the condition of the supporting structure.
- Prevent unauthorised removal or alteration, provide a controlled alternative before opening any section, keep people outside the exposed zone, and formally verify and record reinstatement before normal access resumes.

Walk one elevated work area today and physically verify the guardrail fixings, gaps, toe protection and access points before anyone relies on the barrier.
