A Glove Is Not Protection Unless It Matches the Chemical
Gloves that look strong may still allow a chemical to pass through, degrade or create a false sense of security. Effective hand protection depends on the substance, concentration, task duration and likely contact. Before handling begins, confirm the approved glove specification and make sure the work method prevents contamination from reaching the skin during use, removal or disposal.
Controls to confirm
- Check the safety information and approved task assessment, then select the specified glove material, thickness and length for the chemical and expected contact.
- Inspect gloves before use, replace them at the defined interval or immediately after damage or contamination, and never reuse disposable gloves unless the procedure expressly allows it.
- Use the approved removal and disposal method, wash hands afterwards and report any suspected skin contact promptly through the site health and safety process.
Today’s action
Before the first chemical-handling task, compare the gloves at the worksite with the approved specification and ask the work party to explain the change-out and removal method.
