Gas Testing and Atmospheric Monitoring
A Gas Test Is a Snapshot, Not a Promise
An acceptable atmosphere at the start of a task does not guarantee that conditions will remain acceptable. Process changes, nearby work, loss of ventilation, leaks or disturbance of residues can change the atmosphere without obvious warning. Gas testing must match the hazard, location and work phase, and the team must know when repeat or continuous monitoring is required and what will trigger an immediate stop.
Controls to confirm
- Have an authorised competent person use suitable, in-date equipment to test the required locations and atmospheric levels in accordance with the approved procedure.
- Repeat testing or maintain continuous monitoring at the specified frequency, and stop work immediately if an alarm activates or conditions change.
- Keep ventilation, isolation and access controls effective throughout the task, and never rely on an earlier result after an interruption or change in work scope.

Before work begins, ask the authorised tester and work party to confirm the monitoring frequency, alarm response and conditions that require a fresh test.
