A Familiar Route Can Still Change Faster Than the Driver Expects
Routine journeys can encourage assumptions about road condition, travel time and personal readiness. Weather, traffic, security conditions, vehicle defects and fatigue can change a familiar trip into a higher-risk task. Journey management should confirm that the driver, vehicle, route and communication plan are suitable before departure and remain suitable throughout the journey.
Controls to confirm
- Confirm the authorised route, current conditions, check-in plan and credible alternatives before departure, including the decision points for delay or cancellation.
- Complete the required vehicle checks and ensure the driver is licensed, rested, fit for the journey and free from avoidable distraction.
- Maintain agreed check-ins, stop in a safe location when conditions deteriorate and report route changes, delays or missed contacts through the approved process.
Today’s action
Before the next journey, ask the driver to state the route, check-in time and the condition that would trigger a safe stop or return.
