A Cooler Planet Depends on What Stays Inside the Cooling System
World Ozone Day 2026 is observed under the theme ‘Global action for a cooler planet,’ marking ten years of the Kigali Amendment. At worksite level, that global action becomes practical: know which refrigerants are in use, prevent avoidable releases, improve cooling efficiency and recover refrigerant when equipment is serviced or retired. A system that only works after repeated topping-up is signalling an environmental defect, not a completed repair.
Controls to confirm
- Maintain an accurate inventory of cooling assets, refrigerant type and charge information; include environmental impact, energy performance, equipment compatibility and safe servicing needs when purchasing or replacing a system.
- Use competent authorised technicians to investigate losses, repair and verify leaks, and recover refrigerant with suitable equipment; never treat routine topping-up or deliberate venting as an acceptable operating practice.
- Reconcile refrigerant issued, added, recovered and transferred, retain service and end-of-life records, and send recovered material and retired equipment only through approved, traceable routes.
